Alma Ata University Professional Nursing Program โ Experiencing sudden bleeding from the nose, or commonly known as nosebleeds, can often cause panic. It is crucial to understand the correct approach to address nosebleeds. Typically, when nosebleeds happen, most people immediately lie down or tilt their heads backward. However, it is essential to note that this method is not effective. So, what is the most effective response for nosebleeds?
Hereโs how to effectively handle nosebleed:ย
- Sit upright and lean your body forward.Ensure that you maintain an upright posture and slightly lean your body forward. Keeping an upright stance helps reduce the pressure on the blood vessels in your nose, thereby minimizing the continuous flow of blood. Additionally leaning your body forward prevents blood form re-entering your nasal passages, preventing the possibility of inhalation that might stimulate your stomach.
- Pinch the edges of the nostrils.Employ your thumbs and index finger to grasp the edges of your nostrils for approximately 10-15 minutes. While doing this, attempt to inhale through your mouth.ย Squeezing the nostrils aid in exerting pressure on the bleeding spot in the nasal septum, effectively halting the blood flow.
- Refrain from inhaling through the nose initially. To avert a recurrence of bleeding, abstain from inhaling through your nose and avoid leaning forward for a few hours following a nosebleed. You can also delicately administer some petroleum Gel to the inner part of your nose using either cotton or your fingers.ย
- Seek prompt medical assistance if the nosebleed persists.
Additionally, attempt to pinch your nostrils again. However, if the nosebleed shows no signs of stopping, seek immediate medical assistance.ย If the bleeding recurs, blow your nose to clear any blood clots. Then, use a nasal decongestant spray containing oxymetazoline (Such as Afrin) on both sides of your nose.
