D3 Midwifery Study Programme of Alma Ata – Exposure to cigarette smoke that can cause risks in pregnancy usually occurs because husbands are smoking in the house without considering other family members becoming passive smokers, or women (mothers) who are active smokers. The effects of cigarette smoke exposure on pregnant women can affect the foetus health in the womb, as it can initiate premature babies or babies born with low birth weight.ย
The effect of cigarette smoke from husbands is very dangerous because 75% of cigarette smoke are inhaled by pregnant women who become secondhand smoker (passive smoking). It contains five times more carbon monoxide, and four times more nicotine and tar. The knowledge of the dangers of cigarette smoke for pregnancy needs to be improved, especially for pregnant women themselves, and other family members(Haerani et al. 2020).
There are still many people who smoke inside the house while this habit harms families exposed to cigarette smoke, for example endangering pregnant women because cigarette smoke can have an impact on her and the fetus such as LBW, disability, miscarriage and even death during childbirth.
